Abstract

This paper analyses the field of Contemporary Art in the Basque Autonomous Region in Spain in the light of the process of “institutional reflexivity”. Feminist theories, “feminist mutations”, Gender Equality Laws, Art institutions, political platforms and women’s associations for equal opportunities in Art, all act in this field. Taking into account that initiatives such as organizing exhibitions of “women artists”, the FEMINISTALDIA, or the festival Miradas de Mujer, are pragmatic adjustments to a situation affected by the institutions created to reach gender equality, it is noted that these initiatives could be counterproductive for the artists.
